As we all know, water is an important aspect of life and needs to to be clean and hygienic. Various suppliers are available that provide water treatment solutions. Drinking water, as we all know, must be safe and free from harmful chemicals or substances. Excessive water hardness and high concentration of total dissolved solids (tds) are undesirable too, particularly for industrial purposes. The water treatment processes which are most important are sediment removal, water filtration, bacteria disinfection through UV and hardness softening.
Overall, the goal of water treatment is to remove contaminants that are present in the water. Irrespective of the original source, no water shall be assumed to be completely contaminants free. Filtration would remove turbidity and bacteria from the water as it removes any remaining suspended solids. In water supplies that are known to be fluoridated, 1 milligram per liter (mpl) of fluoride is added.
Suspended solids, bacteria, and other organisms may be removed by passing the water through a sand bed or pulverized coal bed, or through a cartridge of fibrous material supported on a core. Soluble particles such as salts and metals in ionic form do not get removed through filtration. Several methods of treatment of water are available to handle living organisms. The application of chlorine is the most common of them. Some cases include the use of UV ultraviolet light or ozone. Boiling the water is a common household emergency measure. To soften hardness in municipal water, the need arises where the natural water has a hardness level in excess of 150 ppm (parts per million). For industrial high-pressure steam boilers, deionization of the hard water is needed, and its treatment includes cation and anion exchangers.
Raw and post-treatment water shall be tested for physical, bacterial, and chemical standards, particularly color, pH, and turbidity. The United States Safe Drinking Water Act of '74 established maximum contaminant levels, which are known to be the national drinking water standards. These standards apply to any water distribution system that serves at least 25 units daily. Water Safety Standards may vary from state to state, but cannot be lower than those mandated by the USA federal government.
Most households that use water supplied by their municipal water provider may need to worry about point of use water treatment, because it is their water company's responsibility to provide biologically and chemically safe drinking water that has objectionable taste and odor removed. However, most folks using public water do not need to employ point of entry water treatment devices or more expensive units like water distillation and reverse osmosis. It is important, however, to obtain and read the annual water quality report that can be available.
Some contaminants involved in public water would be liable to experience at harmful or unacceptable levels are: Residual disinfectants such as chlorine and chloramines, which are added to keep water safe during distribution but may need to be removed prior to consumption.
